A SCHOOL in Swindon that helps youngsters with severe learning difficulties or autistic conditions is set to welcome more pupils.

Uplands School in Tadpole Lane has received planning permission approved for the Brunel Academies Trust’s plan to install a pre-fabricated extra classroom.

The trust says it will allow the school to take 150 pupils - aged between 11-19 - with such special needs compared to 132 without the new classroom.

Williams Patrick, acting on behalf of the school, says the development will allow for an increased floor area to meet the additional intake.

The design and access statement from the commercial surveyor says: “The new building alleviates overcrowding and will enhance the learning environment for all current and future young people at the school.”

The project is being funded by Swindon Borough Council.

Back in 2016, Uplands School executive head teacher, Jackie Smith was made an MBE in Queen Elizabeth’s II 90th birthday honours list.

The school has also been previously rated as Outstanding by Ofsted.
