A TEENAGE boy has been taken to hospital in a serious condition after a hit and run outside a Swindon school.

Police say that a car failed to stop at the scene opposite Nova Hreod Academy on Walkingshaw Road, near Akers Way, after a collision that happened at around 8.20am.

Police are urgently appealing for witnesses and would like the driver of the burgundy vehicle involved to get in touch with them as soon as possible.

The main route closed in both directions shortly after the accident happened and is expected to remain shut for most of the day while officers investigate the area.

An air ambulance is reported to have landed nearby. The Adver has approached Wiltshire Air Ambulance for comment.

The road closure brought rush hour traffic to a standstill and caused queues tailing back to Moredon Road, Westfield Way and Purton Road.

These queues have since eased, but drivers are advised to seek alternative routes and avoid unnecessary journeys in this area if possible.

Chief Inspector Paul Saunders said: “This was a serious collision and the next of kin of the child involved have been informed and are being supported by officers at this incredibly difficult time.

“We know this incident will have caused upset and concern amongst the local community – especially given events that unfolded on this same stretch of road 31 years ago.

"Officers remain in the area this morning, conducting enquiries and speaking with local residents.”

The events Ch Insp Saunders referred to in his comments involved a tragic crash on Akers Way on September 13 1991, in which a driver lost control of his car while racing another motorist and reached speeds of up to 90mph before hitting five children.

After the crash, the speed limit on Akers Way was lowered from 40mph to 30mph and a new roundabout was added to the entrance of Cheney Manor Industrial Estate.

A memorial plaque to the lives lost marks the site of the bench where the children were playing.
