Jonny Williams is set to return to Swindon Town after his World Cup adventure with Wales came to a close last night.

The 29-year-old was selected as part of Wales manager Rob Page’s squad for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar this year.

Although it came as a shock to some in Swindon and Wales, Williams’ inclusion was very much planned by the Welsh manager.

“Jonny Williams is just as important to the group as what Gareth Bale is and that’s why I continue to select him,” he said earlier this month prior to the first match.

“He is first class, along with Chris Gunter and these lads have created this environment.”

Despite spirits being high amongst the Welsh contingent, the team did fall short of qualifying for the knockout rounds, instead exiting at the group stage.

In what was their first World Cup finals since 1958, Wales faced off against the United States, Iran and rivals England in a feisty trio of Group B fixtures.

The Dragons showed a spirited performance in their opening match against the Americans with a 1-1 draw thanks to a late Gareth Bale penalty, but things went downhill from there.

Consecutive defeats to Iran and England meant that Wales exited the competition last night, with Williams not being afforded one minute on the pitch in the campaign.

This international outing made Williams just the fourth Swindon Town player to go to a World Cup.
