Campaigners will gather with cake to mark the third anniversary of the closure of Swindon's museum and art gallery.

The Save Swindon Museum and Art Gallery campaign group, which fought fiercely to get Swindon Borough Council to reopen the Apsley House facility in Old Town, has announced it intends to mark this anniversary.

The group is organising a gathering outside the former museum building, on Bath Road, on March 17 at 1pm.

A spokesperson for the group said: "Three years have passed since Swindon's Museum & Art Gallery was closed without a plan and without consultation, leaving our heritage and art locked away in storage.

"Whilst new plans for a new museum at the Civic Offices are welcomed, they seem to be slipping further into the distance, with none of the building work even started.

"Whilst it's not the 'birthday' we'd like to be celebrating, we'll be making the best of it, and reminding the council just how much Swindon's heritage, art and creativity mean to us.

"Join us for cake and community outside Apsley House to mark the day."

The council has greenlit plans for a new home for Swindon’s collection of art and artefacts at the borough council’s Civic Offices in Euclid Street but recently announced it will not be ready as early as originally hoped.
