Christmas is a special time of year.

People love to get into the festive spirit and gather in their hundreds for fun events as the winter nights draw in.

The Adver has collected nostalgic photos from Old Town lights switch-ons, Winter Parades through Regent Street, and Santa setting up a grotto to greet visitors in the Brunel Shopping Centre during the noughties and nineties.

We've also delved even further back with the help of the Central Library's Local Studies department to showcase school nativity plays, musical gigs and Christmas parties from decades ago.

Hopefully these heartwarming images bring back fond memories - and we hope this Christmas is just as merry and happy.
