More Lidl roadworks as electrics connected up to new store

Work on the new Lidl and country park being built next to Brinkworth Road in Royal Wootton Bassett first began in late January 2025.

The construction saw temporary traffic lights installed on the road for six months, from March to September 2025, to allow workers to access the site.

With the basic structure of the building now complete and landscaping of the car park and adjacent country park progressing quickly, the site is now drawing near to completion.

Once complete, the location will include a large supermarket, a 125-space car park with electric vehicle charging, and a 2.15-hectare country park adjacent to the store at Marsh Farm.

New roadworks, which began in Royal Wootton Bassett on Monday, September 29, will now allow workers to connect up electrics to the new Lidl and complete the finishing touches.

The roadworks are in place from Coped Hall Roundabout and along the A3102 Swindon Road, and two-way traffic lights have been installed.

These are expected to be in operation from 3pm on Monday, September 29 until 6am on Tuesday, October 7.

It's understood by the Swindon Advertiser that once these roadworks are lifted, the Lidl construction will not cause any more temporary traffic lights or major road disruption.

Although Lidl is yet to publicly confirm an official opening date for its new Royal Wootton Bassett store, a spokesperson for Tinnelly Construction told the Adver: "We will be on site until early 2026."

Tinnelly Construction has built many of Lidl's previous stores, including multiple sites in Gloucester, Lincoln, Bristol and Cardiff.

Workers on Brinkworth Road added that they expected to be at the Lidl development until "the end of 2025 or early 2026", adding: "That normally means it's likely to open in spring 2026."

With the Lidl construction having been ongoing since January 2025 (10 months at the time of writing), this means it is likely that the construction is now only two to three months away from completion.

The store has been a long time in the making, as plans for a Lidl supermarket and a care home were put forward and refused in 2017.

New plans submitted in 2023 for a supermarket and country park then faced multiple hurdles due to drainage concerns, and the site wasn't given the green light until September 2023.

A condition, put in place by Wiltshire Council when plans were approved, states that Lidl will not be allowed to open the store until landscaping for the adjacent country park is also completed.

It comes after concerns that the non-obligatory country park would never be built, and was just a way to "sweeten up" the council.
