For many, a white Christmas is something that is dreamt of by people all across the country, with it featuring widely in popular culture and tradition.
However, snow on Christmas Day is not something we all get to experience regularly as these conditions are usually restricted to the highland areas of Cumbria, Wales and Scotland.

What is a white Christmas?

The definition of a white Christmas is rather broad, with only a single snowflake needing to be recorded falling at any point at one of the Met Office's 300 observing posts during December 25.
This means that the snow does not have to be deep or crisp and can be barely visible to the average observer.
Snow that has landed before Christmas Day and not during the holy day does not count, meaning it must fall within the 24-hour period.
When was the last white Christmas?
According to BBC Weather, the last time there was a "widespread" white Christmas was in 2010, when snow was recorded falling at 19% of weather stations in the UK.
A further 83% of weather stations recorded that snow had already landed on the ground.
Will there be a white Christmas in 2025?
The Met Office states: "We can accurately forecast if snow is likely on any given Christmas Day up to five days beforehand."
This means we won't have a full prediction until the five days leading up to the important date.

However, BBC Weather claims that longer-range forecast models are beginning to show the possible trends that suggest there could be snow over the Christmas period.
This is influenced by wider teleconnections, large-scale interactions in which weather patterns in distant regions create atmospheric waves and flows that affect conditions thousands of miles away.
One of these influences includes a "warm blob" in the Pacific Ocean, which could favour higher pressure and colder conditions developing in Europe.
