A sinkhole has opened up in a car park on Swindon's High Street as urgent safety concerns are raised.
The deep hole, which has appeared at The Square car park opposite Kioki nightclub, was first spotted by residents walking through Old Town's High Street on Thursday afternoon, December 4.
Eye-witnesses at the scene have estimated that the hole is around three metres by two metres wide and have warned that "it's getting worse."
Swindon Borough Council is aware of the issue and is dealing with it.
"It's in the little car park opposite Kioki nightclub and it's getting worse," said one resident, who does not wish to be named.
"I saw it at about 3.30pm because I was on my way to the barbers.
"I work on the roads and I have been tarmacking for 14 years so I have seen some sinkholes in my time.
"This one is by far the worst I have seen."
He added: "It's quite worrying because you can see where the drain has possibly collapsed and the tarmac is still moving now. It's really fresh.
"You can see that the tarmac is starting to sink. If a little kid fell down there they could easily get stuck."
Other Old Town residents have described it as "like a cavern."
Swindon Borough Council, highways maintenance teams and Wiltshire Police have been informed of the issue.
Although the cause of the sinkhole is not yet known, the British Geological Survey reports that the deep holes can often appear in roads after periods of extreme weather such as heavy rains or heatwaves and droughts.
