Christmas is such a special time of year.

People love to get into the festive spirit and gather in their hundreds for fun events as the cold winter nights draw in.

The Adver has collected a gorgeous gallery of nostalgic photos from Old Town lights switch-ons, Winter Parades through Regent Street, and Santa setting up a grotto to greet visitors in the Brunel Shopping Centre, amongst other activities during the noughties and nineties.

We've also delved even further back with the help of the Central Library's Local Studies department to showcase school nativity plays, musical gigs and Christmas parties from several decades ago.

These heart-warming images capture precious glimpses of times gone by and should bring back some fond memories for readers old and new.

We hope that this holiday season is just as merry and happy for all of you.

Merry Christmas!
