Police patrolling the M4 in Wiltshire have caught out several illegal van drivers and issued huge fines on the spot.
Officers from Wiltshire Police's Specialist Operations Unit were out patrolling the M4 in Wiltshire on Tuesday, January 27, when they spotted an illegal foreign van attempting to pass through the county.
The van was found to be far above the legal weight limit for a vehicle in the UK, weighing in at 76 per cent over the limit.
Police at the scene say that the driver, who was pulled over due to concern over the weight of the van, was also found to be committing several other offences.
The van has now been deported from the UK on a recovery truck, and the driver issued a £600 fine on the spot.
"In conditions like these, it’s a disaster waiting to happen," said a spokesperson for Wiltshire Police.
This isn't the only van to have been caught out on January 27.
Later that day, a second offender driving a white van was also caught out on the M4 and found to be 14.5 per cent over the legal weight limit, resulting in a £400 fixed penalty notice.
"DVSA issued a delayed prohibition for an oil slick from a blown seal. Van chained until weight reduced," added a spokesperson for the specialist team.
Wiltshire's Specialist Operations team is continuing to carry out patrols on the M4 and is urging drivers to check their vehicles fall within legal limits before getting behind the wheel.
