The M4 will be closed for five hours, police have confirmed, as firefighters tackle a major fire on a hay lorry.
The M4 blaze broke out shortly after 11am between Junctions 15 (Swindon East) and 16 (Swindon West) and has caused chaos on the motorway.
All three lanes of the M4 westbound have now been closed and cars are being turned around at the scene.
Eyewitness statements have described flames and black smoke billowing from the road, and video footage has shown a large emergency service response.
A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police said: "Please be aware that the M4 westbound between junctions 15 and 16 is closed due to a significant lorry fire.
"Please find alternate routes. We will provide updates when appropriate.
"This is expected to be closed for around five hours.
"Please allow extra time for journeys."
A spokesperson for National Highways said: "The M4 has closed westbound between J15 Badbury and J16 Swindon due to an HGV fire. Dorset & Wiltshire Fire Service are leading the response at the scene.
"Please allow extra time if you're travelling in the area."
The AA's traffic monitors state: "All lanes stopped and queueing traffic due to vehicle fire on M4 Westbound between J15 A419 Marlborough Road (Swindon East) and J16 A3102 Swindon Road (Swindon West)."
Motorists travelling on the M4 westbound past Swindon should avoid the motorway and find alternative routes where possible.
