Wetherspoons fans have questioned what will happen to The Savoy in Swindon after an offer has been accepted.
The Savoy, on Regent Street in Swindon town centre, went up for sale on Rightmove back in May 2026.
Although the price was not publicly disclosed, it was advertised as available on application.
A Wetherspoon spokesperson has since confirmed that an offer has been accepted, although details about the future of the pub and the new owner are yet to be revealed.
The pub will continue trading as usual until this sale has been finalised.
Here’s what Swindon Advertiser readers had to say on the matter.
Several residents have speculated on potential new uses for the site.
Danny Smith said: “Giant barber shop probably", while others say: “Cinema!”
Adam Copnell said: “Gonna be a wicked vape shop when it changes hands.”
Several pub-goers are disappointed at the sale.
Michael Purbrick said: “Swindon born. Still visit two or three times a year and generally stay in the hotel opposite the Savoy.
“Plenty of memories of Saturday morning cinema. The city centre is now such a dire place, so sad to see, was new fresh and exciting in the 80s, now a location that’s doesn’t feel safe day or night.”
Andy Mcaulay added: “When does the closing down, everything must go sale start?”
Martin Newman said: “Hopefully the new landlord will, clean the place, replace the sticky carpet and get rid of the undesirable elements of their clientele.
“I’ve not been in there for years but from what I’ve seen walking past it’s got worse after I decided it was no longer a welcoming environment.
“I’m speaking from my personal experience, I used to go there regularly but not been for a few years now. The Hive, Hop and Glue Pot are far nicer.”

Tracy Louise replied: “Never understood why they don’t allow dogs but people sitting there getting drunk in front of their young children is ok?”
John Stooke replied: “Clearly none of you people actually use the Savoy, otherwise you would know exactly what it’s like.
“Right now, it’s a lovely quiet evening, all sorts of different age groups young and old enjoying reasonably priced food and astonishingly cheap drinks, lots of conversation lots of laughing.
“As for the dregs that you describe outside, there are about 25 people out there and two probably had rather too much to drink but they’re all quiet.
“They’re either smoking or chatting and it’s a really nice family atmosphere.
“I come here two or three nights a week and I can say to you, you shouldn’t listen to rumour and innuendo and not be too influenced by what you perceive to be loads of drunken people out the front, there are a few now and again.”
Andrew Little replied: “Also a better selection of Real Ales unlike the Sir Dan, hopefully it will go the same way, and the sale falls through so It stays open.”
Nita Tait said: “I hope they don't turn it into flats," while another commenter added: “Turn it back to a picture house. Good old days. Ices and popcorn from the nice lady at the front.”

Pavvy replied: “There were actually three Wetherspoons in town at one point.”
Julie Basford said: “No news really until we’re told who is buying it and the purpose for which they intend to use it.”
Ian Brown said: “It may become a new religious centre and it has local car parks nearby.”
