There has been a change at Westminster, you’ll no doubt have seen the new Prime Minister has been making a series of announcements centred on bringing breathing space to communities across the country.
Over the summer these changes included a 20 per cent business rate cut for pubs, clubs and live music venues, a removal of VAT on domestic energy bills and the capping of bus fares to £2, as well as extending the timeframe the concessionary bus pass can be used.
All of these policies are designed to set the tone of this government, one centred on people and place rather than politics.
As your local MP, I’ve been working in this vein since being elected in 2024, working hard to bring in more jobs and opportunities that will make Swindon succeed.
Most recently I’ve had the pleasure to meet with the new head of the MOD’s drone testing facility in Swindon, Will Green, to discuss how the facility can best support growth in the town and deliver on the needs of our armed forces.
I was also incredibly pleased to see PrevTech finish their move from Marlborough to Swindon and add their skills to the Swindon Drone Hub.
Over the summer, I’ve also been running a charity drive for the Royal British Legion club in Stratton.
They’re the last RBL club in Swindon and as an ex-rifleman RBL places like theirs are incredibly close to my heart and I couldn’t fathom the idea that we would lose the last club in Swindon.
I’m pleased that so far we’ve raised more than £3,000 thanks to individual donors, STARK and SDO associates which has meant the club have been able to deliver some key maintenance work.
However, we’re still looking for more donations to support the club at our GoFundMe page – The Club Stratton Royal British Legion.
I also had the pleasure of hosting a community cultural festival alongside Central Swindon North Parish Council for the first time over the summer, which was a great celebration of various cultures and businesses throughout Swindon North and I hope to work with the Parish again on a festival next year to make it a bigger and better celebration of the various peoples and cultures that make up Swindon.
