Parked HGV's causing 'thousands of pounds' of damage on Swindon estate

Lorries have been seen parked on Marshgate Industrial Estate, behind Greenbridge Retail Park, in Swindon, is causing issues and disruption for businesses and residents in the area.

Lorries are being left in positions that are reportedly obstructing road access and leaving screws, pieces of metal and other debris behind

According to one business owner: "They have caused thousands of pounds worth of damage to tyres through items dropped off the back of the trucks onto the Greenbridge retail park road and into the estate.

"Making business almost impossible for the other firms on the estate."

Those who use the estate have voiced concerns about the potential safety risks, warning that the situation could pose a danger to both motorists and pedestrians.

Lorries across Swindon have been causing concern over where they are choosing to park, with Amazon vehicles reportedly blocking dropped kerbs and industrial estates increasingly being used as unofficial lorry parks.

The issue has been reported to councillor Andrew Cripps, who has raised it with Swindon Borough Council.

Cllr Cripps said: "One of the main concerns is HGVs parking and unloading in a way that can obstruct the road, making access difficult for other road users and businesses. I have also received reports of screws, metal and other debris being left on the carriageway, which I have reported to the Council.

"This is particularly concerning because of the number of businesses and vehicles using Marshgate, as well as children travelling to and from the nearby school.

"I have requested a meeting with Council officers and Marshgate business owners so that we can discuss the problems directly with those affected and look at practical solutions. I have also asked the Council to consider double yellow lines and appropriate parking restrictions to help address problematic HGV parking. I am currently waiting for progress on these requests.

"However, I don’t believe simply moving the lorries on will solve the underlying problem. HGV drivers need somewhere suitable to park and rest.

"I have visited the dedicated lorry park near Sainsbury’s to see the facilities available there. It provides proper facilities for drivers at a relatively modest cost, but I also think we should explore whether there are other suitable options available. This could include looking at whether any underused Council-owned sites could potentially provide additional lower-cost HGV parking, provided they are suitable and meet the necessary requirements.

"I want to see a practical, long-term solution that keeps the road clear and safe, supports the businesses operating there and ensures HGV drivers have appropriate places to park.

"I will continue pursuing this with the Council and pushing for progress."
