A Swindon dog club will celebrate its 100th year with a members’ show and events planned for December.
The centenary will be marked at the club’s annual limited show on December 19, which will take place at Grange Community Leisure in Stratton St. Margaret.
About 100 dogs are expected to enter the event, with club members arriving from across the Southwest to attend the celebration.
Despite the club's relatively small size, many of it's members have gone on to qualify for Crufts, although the club is yet to win the coveted Keddal Trophy.
Karen Bird, chairman of the club, said most competitors are local members, however a number of dog owners are also expected to arrive from out of town.
“We'll get people coming from certainly all over the south of England," she said.
The show will include several activities during the day. A second set of classes will be judged during the lunchtime break, while the main awards are expected to be presented from about 3pm onwards.
Members will also receive a special gift to mark the centenary, and a celebration cake will also be provided.
Despite going strong for 100 years, Karen says the loss of the club's original home, the Oasis Centre, has made it difficult to host large shows.
The club previously held an open show in March, during the week before Crufts, at the Oasis leisure venue, but has since had to stop the event due to the centre closing down.
That event was larger and required more space. The Grange Community Leisure Centre has two rings, while an open show would need about eight rings for breed classes.
“There just isn't a venue like the hall they had at the Oasis that will allow dogs," Karen said.
"So if we're going to have one, we've got to travel a lot further away, and then that doesn't make it a Swindon show.”
Despite the loss of a larger venue, Karen said members continue to attend the club's dog shows, and she looks forward to welcoming them to the celebration in December to mark the club's 100th year.
“We look forward to welcoming all our members in December for, as I say, our centenary show,” she said.
