A COUNCIL scheme to make Swindon a safer, cleaner and smarter place to live has been launched today.

StreetSmart brings together all the services which keep the town’s streets and open spaces looking tidy and well-tended.

The services included in the StreetSmart project are waste and recycling, street care and cleaning, highway maintenance, lighting and parks and open spaces to name just a few.

Coun Brian Mattock, Swindon council cabinet member for local environment and sustainability, said: “StreetSmart will make sure we’re as efficient as possible when it comes to keeping the whole borough attractive and well-maintained.

“We’re already delivering many of the services under StreetSmart to a very good standard, but with all these services organised together, it will make it easier for people to report problems and issues, and bring potential savings into the bargain.

“We want to work together with residents so we can all enjoy where we live and take pride in our neighbourhoods.”

Until now, the services grouped under the StreetSmart banner operated separately in two council directorates – transport and environment and leisure.

Residents also have just one contact number for all services involved in the scheme to make communication a hassle-free job.

Residents can use the number – 01793 445501 – to report problems or ask for information.

Along with the new telephone contact number, residents can also report issues online with a new dedicated weblink www.swindon.g ov .uk/streetsmart
