A JUDGE has blasted Swindon’s under age drinkers after jailing a gang who left a teenager blinded in a booze-fuelled bottling.

Judge Douglas Field said licensees, parents and youngsters needed to take more responsibility to prevent underage drinking as he jailed three teenagers who staged a violent drunken brawl.

Daniel O’Sullivan, 18, was left with a severed eye ball after being attacked outside the Studio nightclub in Old Town.

Roilan Dunster, Chaney King, both 18, and another youth became involved in a dispute with Daniel’s group of friends. After a row Dunster spat at a girl and hit another. The group were then attacked again, before the 17-year-old lashed out at Mr O’Sullivan with a bottle.

“This case dramatically demonstrates the problem of under age drinking,” said Judge Field.

“All these witnesses and defendants involved in this serious public disorder, right here in Swindon, outside the Studio nightclub, were under age and had been drinking heavily.

“I am very pleased to hear from the police this nightclub has been closed down.

“It has been suggested on the night in question the nightclub was selling shots of spirits for 50p to people who were obviously young and obviously drunk.

“I would like people to remember, licensees, young people and parents they must face up to their responsibilities and abide by licensing laws, which are crystal clear. People under 18 are not allowed to buy alcohol.

“It happened late at night on the streets of Swindon and considerable disorder and violence was evident.”

The teenager who wielded the bottle at Daniel on November 11 last year was yesterday sentenced to three and a half years behind bars.

Sentencing the 17-year-old attacker, who cannot be named for legal reasons, Judge Field said yesterday: “You were part of a group intent on violence that night and with a bottle you blinded your victim by slicing into his eye ball.

“Days after you did that you threatened his sister that you would bottle his other eye.

“Chaney King, I am sentencing you on the basis that you hit your victim. You hit him with a bottle and kicked him when he was on the ground.”

To Dunster he said: “You have a very bad record and that makes this more serious. You hit the victim on the head with a bottle, kicked him on the ground. You are really very fortunate the victim did not suffer more serious injuries.”

Dunster, of Mildmay Close, Grange Park, was sentenced to 12 months in jail for committing actual bodily harm and common assault.

King, of Castleton Road, Middleaze, was sentenced to 20 months in jail.
