McGARDENERS have laboured to transform a green space into a new school garden.

Beechcroft Infant School, in Upper Stratton, has been toasting the garden’s completion, which turned a previously untended piece of land into something attractive and eye-catching.

Shrubs were planted and stones laid by 10 members of staff from a number of the fast-food chain restaurants during the last summer holidays.

It was part of a programme, organised by community workers aiming to get businesses involved in community projects.

This week for the first time everyone who participated in the scheme got together to enjoy the 10ft by 6ft garden.

“We’re delighted these volunteers gave up their time,” said headteacher Lynn Harper.

“We’re very grateful for their efforts.

“It’s a nice area for the school to have.

“They’ve even built wooden boxes and plants will grow in them.

“The land at the end of the school in the car park was being neglected and getting tatty so now it’s given it a bit of life.

“Nice shrubs and oriental trees were planted free of charge.

“The kids think it’s lovely and the parents are always pleased to see the environment improved.”

A metal shield has been engraved and placed in the garden to seal its part in Beechcroft’s history.

“It’s close to a footpath so the public will be able to see through to it,” said Mrs Harper.

“We’re all really pleased with it.”

The school on Beechcroft Road caters for pupils aged five to seven.

A litter picking day is being considered by the school.
