THE hunt is on to find the next Swindon blonde bombshell in a Diana Dors lookalike competition.

A contest has been set up by Queens Park Community Council, which is looking for a local person who best embodies the style and glamour of the famous Swindon-born icon.

It is hoped Swindon Mayor David Wren and South Swindon MP Anne Snelgrove will be part of the judging panel during the second annual family fun day at the park on Sunday, July 26.

“Diana Dors has a lot of Swindon connections and links to Queens Park,” said Coun Stan Pajak (Lib Dem, Eastcott) “Everyone knew about her in the 1950s and 1960s and the glamour she brought with her Marilyn Monroe blonde looks.

“She came to the park in the 1950s. It was owned by Desmond Morris’ family at the time before ownership switched to Swindon Council and Desmond knew Diana very well.

“The author described her as having a stunning figure, with smiling bright red lips, long swishing hair, half closed eyes, her walk almost dancing with energy and with a defiant optimism and enthusiasm for life.

“It should be a fun event after the first of its kind last year – hopefully with this competition it will be bigger and better.”

According to critics, Dors’ best work as an actress was the role of a murderess in the 1956 film Yield To The Night, in which she played a woman awaiting execution.

Born Diana Mary Fluck, her early success led her to become the youngest registered owner of a Rolls Royce in the UK.

The winner of the competition will get a picture of the sex symbol and other prizes donated by the Magnum Wine Shop, in Wood Street, Old Town.

Many stalls and music from brass bands will also make for a fantastic day out for all the family.

It is due to start at 11am and continue into the early evening.

If you would like to enter, send in a brief description of why you best fit the Diana Dors profile and enclose a photograph.

Entries must be received by Tuesday, June 30. This can be either writing to chairman Stan Pajak at 165 Drove Road, Swindon, SN1 3AQ, or via email d.pajak@ntlworld.com For more information call Stan on 01793 642936.
