A FORMER IT consultant hopes to turn Swindon homes greens while saving residents thousands of pounds.

Faizcy Hope-Lumley, from Hook, has developed an on-line home appliance calculator, which allows homeowners to count the costs of their fridges, dishwashers, dryers and others.

Faizcy said he decided to develop the website after researching the cost efficiency of two fridges he was looking at purchasing a month after being laid-offfrom work during the last year's banking crisis.

The 33-year-old said: "Money was pretty tight at the time and we were looking for a new fridge.

"When I got home I was thinking about buying two fridges, so I looked their efficiency on-line and found out that one of them was obscene and would have cost me £600 to run each year.

"After speaking to friends I found out there is nowhere else to find this sort of thing out, so I decided to collect and collate data." Since then the former JP Morgan and Bank of New York consultant said he has he been paid thousands to re-develop the software for the Government's Energy Saving Trust.

And the website is currently helping more than 1,000 people per day, including those from outside Britain, to save hundreds on their energy bills by giving them the power to conduct home power audits.

He added: "The website now has the most data on this subject in Europe, more than 10,000 appliances, and more coming each week.

"I have also added a kilowatt calculation application on there, and now people can even see how much money they can save if they decide to lower their weekly wash load counts from six to let's say three.

"I have always been green minded, but more than that I am consumer minded.

"If I have one piece of advice for people it's to sit down for 10-minutes and audit your home.

"When they are done people can decide to either change appliances or even energy supplier.

"The manufacturers, and the energy companies for that matter, don't want people to know how much it costs to run these machines that's why the information is not readily available.

"A fter all they make more money if people don't know.

"This website is all about drawing a line under blind consumption and educating the home-owner to the true costs." He added that during a brief website dishwasher comparison he found three brands that differ greatly including one costing £14.16 to run per year, a second costing £19.82, and a third costing £144.72.

Faizcy now plans to develop another calculator for businesses.
