THOUSANDS of people are expected to turn out for the switching on of Christmas lights in Old Town and Highworth this week.

Tomorrow Wood Street in Old Town will be transformed with dancing, martial arts, fire juggling, singing and Santa Claus before town crier Fred Ferris, Town legend Don Rogers and speedway star Leigh Adams flipping the switch and start the countdown to Christmas.

Heart FM’s Howard Taylor will be welcoming everyone to the event and kicking off the night, setting the scene for some of Swindon’s best up and coming talent.

Richard Deacon, of Deacons and Sons, said: “Don Rogers will conjure up many fond memories for all and especially those old enough to remember just what a player he was.

“Don made his debut in 1962 against Southend, having just turned 17, and Swindon won 4-1.

“Don’s finest hour was in 1969 with Swindon’s remarkable league cup triumph at Wembley in front of 100,000 people.

“His brilliant skill and speed came into play in extra time as he scored two goals against the mighty Arsenal.”

On Friday impressionist Rory Bremner will be the star attraction switching on Highworth’s new Christmas lights. The town council has upgraded the lights and Christmas tree along the High Street this year.

Mayor Melanie Duff said she was delighted to have secured Mr Bremner to turn on the illuminations this Friday. She said: “It is a great coup for Highworth.

“It’s also wonderful to have the new lights and trees.

“Normally the shopkeepers put up their own lights, but this year we have decided to do something different to brighten up the centre.

“The lights and trees were being put up this week thanks to money from the town council and also TS Tech.”

Heart FM breakfast show team and Adver columnists Jez and Roo will also be there beforehand to provide entertainment to the crowds.

Highworth Lions Club will be supplying mince pies and Santa will be there courtesy of a special sledge constructed by the Round Table.

The Highworth Silver Band will also play in the High Street to run alongside a children's fun fair.

The lights in Old Town will be switched on tomorrow at 7pm with entertainment starting at 6pm.

The event in Highworth will begin at 7pm this Friday.
