POLICE investigating an attempted murder have made another arrest in Swindon after a shooting incident.

But officers are keen to reassure the public the shooting was a one-off.

An 18-year-old local woman was taken into custody late on Sunday in connection with the shooting of a 24-year-old man in Spruce Court, Pinehurst.

Several shots were fired into a parked car after 11pm on Saturday and the victim has undergone surgery for non-life-threatening injuries to his right shoulder.

Last night a 20-year-old local man was still being questioned by detectives at Gablecross Police Station.

Supt Kier Pritchard, from Swindon police, said between 50 to 60 officers were currently working on the case.

“An 18-year-old woman was arrested as a direct result of the investigation,” Supt Pritchard said.

“This is an extremely rare situation and we will leave no stone unturned.

“We don’t believe this was a random shooting. We have to treat the investigation with depth and be sensitive.

“There is no evidence of a gun culture in Swindon.

“Local people may still hold vital pieces of the jigsaw and we would urge them to come forward with this information and speak to us.

“We will not tolerate the criminal use of firearms or the use of weapons or violence in any form and will deal robustly, proportionately but fairly with any such incidents.

“Whilst there may be individuals speculating in respect of this incident, people should not take the law into their own hands, under any circumstances, but should contact the police with information, no matter how insignificant they may feel it is, and let us decide whether it is relevant.”

Supt Pritchard said the gun had not yet been recovered, but refused to be drawn on what type of firearm it was. He did not confirm or deny there would be further arrests.

Police are also keeping an open mind as to what is the motivation for the shooting.

Residents have told the Swindon Advertiser they believed it to be drug-related – a theory not ruled out by police.

Coun Maurice Fanning (Lab, Gorse Hill and Pinehurst) said the community should not be alarmed and must remain vigilant at this time.

He said: “It was a big shock but these things happen. The police are visible in the area and it’s important the public shouldn’t worry and be assured this type of incident is rare.”

There continues to be police activity in Pinehurst and police are appealing for anyone who was in the area at the time and who saw or heard anything to make contact with them by calling 0845 408 7000.

Alternatively ring Crimestoppers, where information can be left anonymously, on 0800 555 111.

On Sunday afternoon an 18-year-old local woman was arrested for conspiracy to murder and is currently in Gablecross police station.

The wounded man has now left hospital and is helping police with their inquiries.
