A lifesaving fundraiser in Swindon is set to help two of the town’s charities as well as providing people with invaluable tips on resuscitation.

The event is being organised by Meditec Training, the first aid group set up by Andrew Memory, 27, after he was made redundant last year.

He is offering 96 free places to people in Swindon to be given basic life support training and is just asking that they make a donation to his two chosen charities – the Swindon Therapy Centre For MS and the Swindon Youth Mentoring Project (Smash).

He said: “When I set up Meditec Training, I had the drive and dream to help local charities that need help and donations.

“Working with the local charities is very important to me, especially whilst we all experience the pinch of the current economic downturn.

“If I can help raise funds and awareness of local charities then it would be a real satisfaction for me personally.

“On completion of the course candidates will be able to confidently demonstrate resuscitation of an adult, child and infant.

“Meditec Training will accept no profit for the courses or costs in setting up this event, all I ask if people would like to attend they donate as much as they can so we can split all profits straight down the middle to help the charities that have been chosen.”

The course, which lasts about 80 minutes, will teach those taking part about what to do when someone is choking, casualty assessment, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, ventilation and what to do if someone is unconscious.

The Swindon Therapy Centre for MS offers treatment and support to people living with MS and their families as well as those suffering from strokes, Parkinson’s disease and children with cerebral palsy, autism and brain injuries.

The centre, which has recently moved into new premises in Westmead, also houses a state-of-the-art oxygen therapy chamber.

The Smash project helps to mentor vulnerable young people in Swindon as well as training specialist mentors.

The event is being held on March 13 at the Eldene Community Centre, with sessions running from 10am until 4pm.

There are only 96 spaces so it will be run on a first come, first served basis.
