Cold, muddy, slightly damp, tired and famished . . . and I was only a spectator at The Terminator.

This annual race comprises 12 gruelling miles of hill and streams running around the outskirts of Pewsey, and my partner was the one taking part.

So I showed my support and cheered him on with the promise of a lovely Sunday lunch for when, or if, he ever finished.

He did.

And we did...have a lovely Sunday lunch that is.

I had booked a table for 12 of us at The Woodbridge Inn (just on the edge of Pewsey).

Staff kindly reserved a large table in our own little room just off the main bar. And even though the pub was bustling with diners they managed to give us concession for a couple more guests and we still got our dinners served up hot and at the same time.

Everyone chose the traditional roasts on offer of either beef or pork (or a mixture of both).

Unfortunately for one couple, the pork didn’t come with crackling. But it did come with apple sauce and its own pork gravy, which was said to be ‘devine’ by a qualified gravy connoisseur.

The beef was nice and pink with light and fluffy Yorkshire puddings and a generous helping of vegetables and roast potatoes (for both pork and beef).

The service was friendly and inviting. Extra gravy boats and even a couple of extra roast potatoes were brought when requested to satisfy our hungry needs.

We all had desserts from the sweetboard too.

I had treacle tart, which came hot with a choice of cream, ice-cream or custard. I chose custard.

The double cream went well with the large and rich double chocolate and toffee cream pie that my friend had ordered.

The gooseberry and ginger cheesecake was delicately flavoured, with a nice, firm biscuity base.

Fully fed and well watered, without a single crumb left, we happily paid up.

At £12.95 for two courses there was no grumbling on price, or rumbling of tums, which my very own Terminator was very happy about.

All of us had a main dish and a pudding each, but you could opt for a starter and main instead if you prefer.

A main roast on its own is £8.95 and a dessert is £4.50.

Starters range from £3.95 - £5.50.

The inn also offer a deal on wine - buy two glasses and the rest of the bottle is free.

Real ale is also available, so everyone's palates are catered for.

This traditional Wiltshire coaching inn is open for food all day on Saturdays and Sundays, from 12 noon to 9.30pm, which, for late starters like ourselves is brilliant.

However, we were warned that the Sunday roasts may run out by 2.30pm (we ate around that time and managed to all get one), but there are still lots of reasonably priced and lovely sounding dishes to choose from the main menu.

I’ll be back!
