A NEW regional learning centre has opened at New College.

The Trade Union Studies learndirect centre will help workers in the southwest improve skills they can use in the workplace and in everyday life including English, maths and IT.

Frances O'Grady, deputy general secretary of the TUC, was at the launch along with Swindon MPs Anne Snelgrove and Michael Wills.

It is hoped members will be able to link up to the Swindon centre to access online computer courses 24 hours a day to give more choice to union members.

Elaine Dobson, the South West TUC's regional development worker, said: "The beauty of the centre is its flexibility.

"You can learn in the centre itself, in your workplace, at home or anywhere where there's a broadband connection, which frees up people from travelling miles to their nearest college."

Ros Etheridge, TU Studies centre manager at New College, said: "The centre provides a one-stop-shop for the education of trade unionists across the South West of England.

"These courses will help boost the confidence, employability and opportunities for workers."

New College principal Graham Taylor said: "We're delighted to have been chosen by the TUC to support workforce learning in Swindon, Wiltshire and the South West region. It's great that we can train workers, particularly those who need basic maths, English and IT skills."
