THREE youths suspected of taking part in an assault on a police officer have been released from police custody.

PC Paul Matthews was on patrol in Freshbrook, when he was allegedly threatened with a knife and surrounded by a gang taunting him.

The incident happened just after 10pm on Monday when the officer was on patrol in Godolphin Close.

He had gone to the close following reports of youths gathering in the area.

He spoke to the group of teenagers and asked them to disperse but they became abusive and surrounded him. It is alleged one then produced a knife and threatened him while the rest continued with the taunts.

PC Matthews called for back-up and the group fled but he spotted one of the youths nearby, who became violent when he tried to arrest him. PC Matthews was pushed to the ground, injuring his elbow and damaging his mobile phone.

Insp Willie Glasgow, pictured, of Swindon police, said attacks on officers would not be tolerated.

Two 18-year-olds and a 16-year-old have been released on bail pending inquiries.
