What better than a Sunday lunch to give us the energy for an afternoon walk along the Bedwyn Brail?

We’d heard good things about the popular Swan at Wilton. This picturesque village, about six miles south of Marlborough, also boasts a working windmill and beam engines (during seasonal opening times).

Although a little on the expensive side at £13.95, there was a generous portion of roast topside of beef and the Yorkshire puddings were like chefs hats (which is how I always try – and fail – to make them myself).

The roast dinners came with crisp and fluffy-on-the-inside roast potatoes, glazed roast parsnips and a delicious gravy (of which I asked for more). There was a side dish of crunchy French beans and carrots.

The roast loin of pork (also £13.95) came with a cider gravy, crackling and the same side vegetables.

Even though I couldn’t finish off my last roast potato I still decided to join my companion in ordering a dessert. I went for the sticky toffee pudding (£5.50) which came with butterscotch sauce, and I asked for cream instead of creme fraiche. Although it was a pretty heart shape, it did taste a little overcooked.

The banoffee pie (£5) on the other hand was absolutely delicious – a liberal helping, served with creme fraiche. I am lucky to have a generous partner, who let me have a couple of forkfuls!

Service was quick and efficient on this busy Sunday afternoon, and we were offered delicious wines to accompany our meals. Both from Puglia in southern Italy, the white wine was Verdeca Masseria Torre Rossa, Terre di Sava 2008 and the red wine was Negroamaro, Masseria Torre Rossa, Terre di Sava 2008. They cost £3.50 per 175ml glass or £13.95 for a bottle.

So, bellies full and palates pampered we went off for our walk in the lovely Bedwyn Brail.
