JOUSTING, morris dancing and fire eating will be among family attractions at the Highworth May Day Medieval Market on Saturday, May 1.

The celebration, organised by the Highworth Community Partnership and the Highworth Historical Society, is expected to draw hundreds of people to the Market Square.

Partnership chairman Keith Smith said: “I am sure thousands of people will want to come along and have an enjoyable day.”

The free event, which runs from 10am to 4pm, will start when Highworth mayor Melanie Duff arrives on horseback in the Market Square to open the fair, amid the sound of St Michael’s Church bells.

Local singers will perform madrigals and folk songs, children will take part in maypole dancing, actors will re-tell the story of St George and the dragon and competitors on bicycles will engage in a jousting competition.

Other attractions will include jugglers, a puppet show, a parade of Jack In The Green, and a display of livestock.

There will be stalls and demonstrations of medieval crafts, including woodworking, weaving and arrow-making.

Parking will be available at Southfield and Warneford schools.
