FEW runners would admit to having a drink for Dutch courage the night before a race.

But that is how Becky Ball prepared for her first Swindon Half Marathon last year – although she would not recommend it.

Becky, 34, from Wootton Bassett enjoyed the 13.1-mile run so much she has already signed up for this year’s race on October 10.

“I hated the training but the race was great,” said Becky.

“Because I did the training on my own it was a bit lonely and hard-going but the race itself was fantastic.

“I love the fact it’s in Swindon so you are running around places you know, everyone cheers you on and there’s just a great atmosphere to the whole event.

“I couldn’t wait to sign up this year.”

Becky will be joined by fellow Slinn Allstars club runners for the event – something she says will make the day even more enjoyable.

The club runners meet at 7.15pm every Tuesday at Slinn Gym in Westmead and turn out en masse for races.

“They’re always there making sure everyone gets over that finish line,” said Becky.

“We all get together at the end and eat cake.

“I think that’s part of the appeal – I get to have two chocolate muffins after a half marathon.”

Becky’s first half marathon was completed in two hours and seven minutes. This year she is hoping to cross the finish in one hour and 57 minutes.

“When I first thought about joining a club I though ‘nah, I’m not a serious runner, a club’s not for me’ but it’s really not like that.

“We don’t claim to be elite athletes or anything, we come in all shapes and sizes and don’t take ourselves too seriously. That’s how I found myself on the start line telling them I had a bit too much to drink last night.

“I’m sure the elites don’t do that.”
