THE work of brain-injured artist Dafydd Rouse will go on sale this month to repay a Purton nursing home for the care staff there have given him.

Dafydd was left with severe brain damage when he was involved in a motorcycle accident five years ago, putting an end to his passion for art, pottery and prose.

Until that point intricately designed pots and paintings filling his homes and those of his family, including sister Margaret Bradbury from Thresher Drive, north Swindon.

Now Margaret, overwhelmed by the quality of care her brother has received at Ash Grove Nursing Home, is selling his creations to raise money for the service.

“The care they have given to Dafydd is unparalleled and I just can’t thank them enough,” she said.

“Dafydd’s pots and sculptures are everywhere and without good homes to accommodate them, they’ll just be locked in a garage where no-one can enjoy them.”

The sale, which will be held at the home on August 28, is the second fundraising event held in her brother’s honour.

Last year she held a sale at the Headway Unit, in Headlands Grove, where Dafydd received continued support, raising over £1,000 for the charity.

Dafydd, 61, was moved from his home in Barnet, north London, to Ash Grove Nursing Home, in Purton, after rehabilitation therapy in 2006 and continues to receive care and support from the Headway charity.

His brother John, 67, moved into the home in 2008 and the pair are always at each other's side.

Headway has been supporting adults with traumatic and acquired brain injury, their families and carers since 1989.

Through Cognitive Rehabilitation Therapy – re-learning the cognitive skills lost or altered through injury – and social rehabilitation Headway tries to help people live as independent a life as possible.

“It’s a wonderful service,” said Margaret.

“They supported Dafydd and myself through so much and they seemed like the obvious choice when it came to finding a cause to benefit from the sale.

“But seeing the high quality care he and John receive I really want to say thank you to them in a way that will make a difference.”

The sale will run from 10.30am to 3pm on Saturday, August 28.
