MOTORISTS faced confusion when part of a roundabout was closed off due to a lorry overturning and blocking the exits.

Police were called to the roundabout on County Road in Swindon at 7.40am yesterday.

They cut off the route and redirected traffic along Ocotal Way while the lorry was causing an obstruction.

Motorists were redirected past Tesco and the route towards County Road was blocked off for two hours, which would have caused rush hour chaos if it had not been Bank Holiday Monday.

Speaking at the scene of the incident, PC Neil Hardman, of the roads policing unit for Wiltshire Police, said they could not be sure what had caused the incident.

“The driver was coming around the roundabout from the Great Western Way to go along Manchester Road,” he said.

“He came around the roundabout and rolled it. It could be due to going slightly too quick, it could be due to excessive steering but he lost control and rolled it.

“I was sent here at 7.40am so it would have happened just prior to that.

“You can see the marks on the road. The road has been shut for two hours now.”

The vehicle involved was a 7.5 tonne M & S van and truck rental lorry, which was being rented by Sofas UK Ltd.

The driver of the vehicle, who was not available to comment when the Adver arrived at the scene, was not hurt during the incident and no other vehicles were involved.

“No-one was hurt at all, it was a single vehicle on its own,” said PC Hardman.

He also said that no criminal proceedings would be taking place.

A police car and a warning sign were put in place to notify drivers of the obstruction and these were removed after the lorry was towed away just before 10am.

Traffic continued as normal on the other side of County Road throughout the incident.

The route quickly returned to normal after the lorry had left the scene and police officers signalled motorists back onto the road.
