GMB has given notice of another day of strike action at Great Western Hospital.

The union represents 130 Carillion workers in the housekeeping department at GWH who have already taken 18 days of strike action.

The GMB claims Carillion has failed to deal with evidence of bribery and shakedown.

The one-day stoppage will be held on May 16.

GMB members suspended the strike action in March to allow Carillion time to conduct the second investigation into the allegations and Carillion expects to conclude this in June.

GMB Regional Secretary Paul Maloney said: “Carillion continues to demonstrate all the urgency of a sundial over the situation at Great Western Hospital.

“After months of denial and doublespeak they find themselves wallowing in a mire of bribery, shakedowns, corruption and cover up – and their response?

“To announce to the media that their investigation won’t be concluded for another three weeks and that it won’t be communicated to staff until the end of June.”

A Carillion spokesman said: “It is extremely disappointing to receive notice of renewed strike action called by the GMB and by a segment (roughly one third) of our workforce at the Great Western Hospital on Wednesday, May 16.

“We wish to reassure the hospital authorities, patients, their families and other staff that we have full contingency plans in place to safeguard the normal functioning of the Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust services at the hospital and to minimise disruption to patient care.

“In a co-ordinated move, we see the GMB is planning to bus in a number of outside speakers to a ‘public meeting’ in Swindon in a blatant attempt to sow further discontent. “These two disruptive actions, together with the GMB’s recent release of misleading and inaccurate statements, appear to be aimed solely at undermining our investigation and securing its own official recognition as a union, which neither Carillion nor its two union partners, UNISON or Unite, wishes to see.

“We believe that the GMB is acting irresponsibly in refusing to await the scheduled outcome of our extensive investigation of both collective and individual grievances.”
