HUNDREDS of primary school children took part in an Olympics-inspired sports day.

Children from St Leonards CE Primary Academy, Eastrop Infant School, Southfields Junior School and Westrop Primary School were involved in the event at Highworth Warneford School on Wednesday.

About 850 children took part in the cluster Olympics event and each class represented a different country.

Alice Sharps, head of PE at Highworth Warneford, said: “They absolutely loved it. They were very competitive and they were cheering each other on.

“Each class made an Olympic torch for a competition and they were given a certificate to say well done on making a torch.

“This is the first year we have done it but the schools want it every year now because the kids really enjoyed it.”

Key Stage 1 pupils took part in a 50m sprint, an egg and spoon race, a relay and a long jump.

Children who are in Key Stage 2 took part in a 100m sprint, hurdles, 400m sprint and a relay.

Southfields Juniors won the Key Stage 2 section and Eastrop Infants claimed the honours in the Key Stage 1 section.

“It was in honour of the Olympcis this year – that is what started it all off,” she said.

“The whole aim was participation so everyone did an event. It was just to get them going about the Olympics and hopefully enthuse them in PE.

“Everyone took part in a race or an event. I hope it has helped to make them more enthusiastic about sport.”

Several Year 10 pupils, known as sports leaders, from Highworth Warneford, helped to run the events, which took place on the school field.

Each class had flags to represent their country, which were waved to cheer the athletes on.

Pupils were at the event for a morning session and an afternoon session.
