A partially deaf woman from Wiltshire says she was treated like she was “stupid” by GreenSquareAccord because of her disability.

Ellen Langley, of Northway in Calne, sought assistance from the housing association with several repairs to her property.

But she claims that call handlers have hung up on her, not understanding that her disability means she is unable to know when she is shouting.

Ms Langley struggles communicating over the phone because of her hearing problems. She explains to call handlers that they must communicate slowly and clearly, or she is unable to understand them.

She said: “They don’t take my disability into account and I explain it to them every time I phone. The first words I say are about my deafness.

“Some of the people who take the calls are brilliant, but others treat me like I’m a pain or an inconvenience. They treat me like I’m stupid when I explain I’m deaf.

“One woman told me to stop shouting because I said ‘excuse me you need to slow down’. When I tried to explain to her, that I didn’t get a word of what she said, all she said was ‘for God’s sake’.”

Ms Langley has experienced several issues with the property in the four years she has lived there. She is most concerned about leaks which are causing damage to her bathroom and windows.

She added that her fence is rotting and falling down in places. She fears it will collapse and hurt somebody on the street.

Ms Langley missed two appointments with her doctor, one in November and one in January, waiting in for scheduled repairs, but nobody turned up. She was not given any warning for one of these missed appointments.

She added: “I’m registered disabled, and I can’t use my downstairs bathroom. I’m constantly hitting a brick wall trying to get the jobs sorted.

“My house is not a home because what is the point in me decorating only for it to get ruined by leaks.”

A GreenSquareAccord spokesperson said: “We are sorry to hear Ms Langley has been experiencing problems.

“We have a record of her hearing impairment, and this should be taken into consideration. We will review any calls Ms Langley made to us within the last six months now we are aware of her discontent.”

GreenSquareAccord added that they have now agreed to replace sections of the fence and will be returning next week to inspect her bathroom roof.
