THE spot where the person who took this picture stood is somewhere near Tesco in Swindon’s town centre.

The children pictured would now be approaching their hundredth birthdays.

A plaque on a wall near the supermarket marks the spot where the old College Street Infants’ School stood before being bulldozed to make way for the Canal Walk development.

An Adver story from 1992 taped to the back of the image says it was taken in 1926 or 1927.

No mention of the occasion is made, but the children’s smart clothes and flags suggest it was a patriotic one.

A possibility is Empire Day, which was celebrated on May 24 and later replaced by Commonwealth Day.
