EXTRA security measures are being added to the closed Oasis Leisure Centre after urban explorers broke in and filmed the inside of the facility.

SevenCapital will be shuttering entrances to the North Star site after pressure from Swindon Borough Council and the Save Oasis Swindon group.

The decision comes after YouTube videos showed people wandering around the changing rooms, maintenance area and even the swimming pools under the iconic dome for many minutes without any difficulty.

One clip showed the explorer hiding from a security guard before carrying on without being caught.

Council leader David Renard told the Adver: “SevenCapital has written to me confirming that they will be increasing security on the site, including shuttering all the entrances.

“I have been putting pressure on SevenCapital for some time now to improve security as each measure they put in place needed another layer, so I am delighted that they have now agreed to this.

“Hopefully it will deter and stop people breaking into the building.”

Mr Renard then informed the Save Oasis Swindon group of the good news because they had been asking him about how security measures would be improved on-site.

A spokesman for the campaign said: “The Oasis will become a fortress after seven months of campaigning.

“But the question remains: ‘why did it take seven long months for a community campaign group, seeking only to protect a building and facility that they love and want to preserve, to get the security on it, that they’ve begged for since January?’”

The group is hosting a protest outside the North Star facility on Saturday afternoon as part of its efforts.

The council is looking into how it could revitalise the much-loved leisure centre.

There have been calls to make the 1970s building a listed historical asset but the council has cautioned against this happening because that would make it harder to get renovations approved.

Earlier this year the local authority released CGI of what a modernised version of the building might look like, with no dome but more energy-efficient heating and electrical systems.
