HIGHWORTH Town made it four Southern League Division One South fixtures in a row without a win following a 3-1 loss to Larkhall Athletic on Boxing Day.

Larkhall’s Lewis Powell netted all three goals to consign Jeff Roberts’ men to just a single point from a possible 12 since their 2-1 victory over Barnstaple Town at the end of November.

The Worthians – playing on home turf for the first time since December 7 – started brightly and created a couple of half-chances in the opening quarter of an hour.

Yet it was the visitors who struck first when Powell worked some space for himself in the box before firing past goalkeeper Connor Johns.

The situation would go from bad to worse for Roberts’ men just three minutes later when Larkhall won a penalty.

Powell stepped up to dispatch the spot kick and double his own and his team’s tally for the afternoon.

Highworth regrouped and prevented any further damage before the break before reducing the deficit 15 minutes into the second half.

Edji Mbunga took advantage of a half-chance to slot the ball home and give his team belief that a comeback was on.

However, the result Highworth were looking for did not materialise as Larkhall striker Powell made it a hat-trick for himself less than 10 minutes after Mbunga’s goal.

The result leaves Highworth in 13th place ahead of their local derby away at Cirencester Town on New Year’s Day.
