THE A361 at Semington is expected to re-open at 11.30am after a BMW car crashed into the river bridge this morning.
Wiltshire Police are appealing for witnesses.
Police said they received a call at 8.30am to report that a silver BMW being driven by a woman was in collision with a white VW Golf driven by a man.
The South Western Ambulance Service sent one ambulance to the scene to treat the woman for minor injuries.
The A361 was partially blocked and caused traffic delays.
Police allowed traffic to go by in single file while they cleared the accident scene although the road was closed for a time.
It is now fully reopened again.
The accident damaged the parapet of the river bridge, pushing stones into the water. The bridge has only recently been repaired.
It is feared that oil and anti-freeze from the BMW may have leaked into the river, with the potential to kill fish and other wildlife.
The Canal and River Trust, the organisation which looks after the UK's waterways, has been approached for a comment.
If you witnessed the accident and can help with the police with their enquiries, call PC547 Tom Wilson at Devizes on 101 or anonymously, via Crimestoppers, on 0800 555 111.
