SWINDON Town will need an element of luck in the emergency loan market if they are to have any chance of maintaining a League One play-off push, according to manager Paolo Di Canio.

The Robins sit seventh in the table following their goalless draw with Sheffield United on Tuesday night and, after being banned from registering new players for more than a month, now have the ability to draft in new recruits following majority shareholder Andrew Black’s injection of equity into the club this week.

However, although Town boss Di Canio finally got his wish and received the funds he needs to add to his depleted squad, the Italian stressed that simply having the flexibility to bring players to Wiltshire does not necessarily mean Swindon are in a prime position to keep up their top-six challenge.

He said: “It’s difficult. Sometimes it’s difficult to explain because even if we bring in four players today it’s not easy, even if there is still a long time to go until the end of the season.

“First of all, they have to understand what’s going on. Second, you have to be lucky because even if they come in front of you and say ‘I can’t wait to play for you, I want to play under you’, after one week when you don’t play them straight away somebody will go out and show their real character and behaviour and maybe they give up straight away.

“We have to be lucky because under me it is not a typical situation that you would have at another club where you play your own football, a typical League One manager who lets a player do what he wants.

“With me I know it is more difficult than moving to another club so you have to be lucky.

“Then I can’t bring in five players for sure – two or three maybe. In this moment I am more worried about the injuries because we thought we would have some players back earlier.”
