DAVE Webb feels that Swindon Supermarine’s enforced rest has come at a good time as the Webb’s Wood side aim to shake off a number of niggling injuries.

Marine’s Southern League Division One South & West meeting with Shortwood on Wednesday was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch and the South Marston outfit have no fixture tomorrow.

Their next game is Wednesday’s Red Insure Cup second-round derby with Cirencester, meaning they will have had 11 days out of action at that point.

But with Kyle Lapham (ankle), Dave Bampton (groin and thigh) and Ash Edenborough (back) still struggling and Craig Curtis not fully fit following groin issues, the manager welcomes the hiatus.

“The little break may work in our favour,” said Webb, whose side have lost three on the spin.

“With the week we’ve had we’re just trying to get ourselves back together as we’ve got a few struggling with injuries.

“We would have had a few missing on Wednesday so maybe we had a little bit of good luck with the weather.

“It would have been nice to play and if we’d won it would have got us back on track, but now we have time to prepare for next week.”

Meanwhile, Cirencester will be hoping to underline their promotion credentials when they take on fellow high-flyers Merthyr at the Corinium tomorrow.

Wide man Lee Smith, who has already hit 20 goals in all competitions so far this season, reckons the third-placed Centurions are right in the hunt for top spot, never mind the play-offs.

“We have plenty of experience in the side and the players are all starting to believe,” said Smith.

“There has been some play-off talk but I don’t see why we can’t be title contenders. We don’t fear anyone.

“Last season, Poole stood out but I think there are eight teams in the running this term and they are already beginning to break away from the others.”
