OAKHURST Primary School won the inaugural Swindon Primary Schools football competition at Lydiard Park.

The tournament, organised by the Swindon Schools Sports Partnership, was for pupils, boys and girls, in years three and four with more than 20 schools competing.

The final between Greenmeadow and Oakhurst saw the latter win 2-0 after they had come through their semi-finals against Sevenfields and Tregoze.

Other schools were: Shaw Ridge, Robert le Kyng, Nythe, Millbrook, Gorse Hill, East Wichel, Even Swindon, Liden, South Marston, Lainesmead, Bridlewood and Wanborough “It was a great day,” said school games organiser Andy Steckbeck. “The standard was actually very good.

“There are lots of tournaments that cater for children in years five and six, but this is the first time we have done something for years three and four.

“The children really had a good day and one of the teachers told me that one of their pupils had come up to ask them ‘how many more sleeps until we play football?’ “We are planning to make this an annual event and we are also looking at doing tournaments for other sports for children in years three and four.”
