THE next two games for Town are immense. Two games against local rivals, two games they must win.
Yes, it’s for the points, but it’s also for the pride and the bragging rights. I worry that the current crop of players just don’t get it. This is the make or break time for the whole season right here.
Win against the Gas and the euphoria could be infectious. But it could be yet another false dawn.
A spirited performance away at Southend to get a point, was followed by a poor showing home to Shrewsbury. A great last-gasp win away against Bolton, followed by a defeat at home against the Posh.
All the fans want is for the players to give a spirited performance, maximum effort, show a level of pride and commitment for the cause and have a belief in their own and the team’s ability.
Give your all, leave nothing out there. It’s all the usual sayings. If the team then lose, then it is not for the want of trying.
Anything less and the fans get restless. They get angry. They start calling for change. “Sack the manager”, “get the owner out”, “what’s the use of a director of football”.
The anger is vented at the home games as the frustration boils over into boos and chants. Trouble is, this becomes a downward spiral. A volatile, hostile atmosphere can promote a poor performance from players, which in turn gets the crowd angrier, more volatile. The players make more mistakes and so on.
We’ve seen too much of that this season. Come on lads, put in the performance that you can feel proud of and the fans can get behind.
