Swindon Town goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux admits missed chances cost his side dear against Chesterfield

Town sent in 20 shots on the Spireites’ goal at the County Ground, although there was no one gilt-edged chance in the face of stubborn defending from Gary Caldwell’s side.

The visitors, meanwhile, hit the back of the net with their sole shot on target, with Town having no chance to respond as it arrived in the last minute of stoppage time.

Vigouroux is sure that if Town had been able to break the deadlock in the manner that their play had warranted, it would have set them on their way to a comfortable victory.

“We had loads of chances, you see the stats and we had 20 shots,” said Vigouroux.

“I don’t think we tested the goalkeeper enough but we had way more possession and they were camped in their own half for long periods of the game and were just playing on the counter.

“When you play teams like that, you have got to put your chances away and then they will start to come at us, the game will open up and we will get more chances.

“With the way we play, most teams haven’t got that same sort of style, so they know we are going to have a lot of the ball and they sit back and we dictate the game and they just try to pounce on individual errors.

“On Saturday, I think we defended very well. They didn’t really have anything on the counter, they just had one opportunity and took it.”

Reece Mitchell was the man to dash Town’s dreams with his last-gasp strike and although Vigouroux commended the Chesterfield man for his composure under pressure, the stopper felt it was extremely harsh on his side.

“They crossed the ball in, one of their players has got a flick on it and the guy is unmarked,” said Vigouroux.

“To be fair to him, in the last minute away from home, it’s a great finish so I have got to give him credit for that.

“I think we deserved more than a defeat, we should have got at least a draw. I would have been disappointed with a draw but that’s the minimum we should have got.”
