CONOR Thomas has left Swindon Town to join Atletico de Kolkata in the Indian Super League.

The midfielder has had his contract at the County Ground terminated by mutual consent and will join Atletico, managed by former England international Teddy Sheringham, in October.

Thomas and his new club announced the switch via social media this afternoon, with Town eventually confirming the deal on their official website this evening.

Thomas posted on Twitter: “Delighted to have signed for Atletico de Kolkata. It’s a great opportunity. Cannot wait to get started and play in front of the fans.

“It's time for a new experience. All the best to the boys for the rest of the season go and get promoted!”

Midfielder Thomas only joined Swindon last summer from Coventry City and still had two years remaining on his contract at the County Ground.

It is not known whether a fee was involved to take the 23-year-old to India.

In total, Thomas made 40 appearances for Town, scoring one goal – a stoppage time winner in a 1-0 victory over Millwall at the County Ground back in March.

Despite featuring prominently in pre-season, Thomas has found himself down the pecking order at the start of the 2017-18 season.

Although he did start the EFL Cup defeat at Norwich City, Thomas has been restricted to two late substitute appearances in League Two fixtures.

Town manager David Flitcroft was full of praise for the contribution made by Thomas at the club during pre-season and says the player moves on with their best wishes.

Flitcroft told Town's official website: “He goes over to India with massive respect, a good CV and he’s got an opportunity out there to really develop his career and develop his standing in the worldwide game.

“Conor has got this opportunity and once you get on that circuit, it is a massive world out there.

“Conor has been the ultimate professional for me and since day one, he’s been the one that has covered the distance and he’s a player who I admire.

“He probably hasn’t got the game time he wants at the moment so he’s looked for another opportunity and he’s got one.”
