PADDY Fitzpatrick praised Ryan Martin’s ‘beautifully composed’ performance against Victor Edagha at London’s York Hall as the Swindon fighter returned to winning form.

Martin was one of five Ferndale Road fighters that took to the ring on Saturday as Fitzpatrick oversaw bouts for Sam Smith, Bec Connolly, Harry Webb and Bradley Townsend.

The night started well for Fitzpatrick as Townsend won on points against Lee Williams before Harry Webb also claimed a points victory.

Sam Smith then defeated Darren Snow before Bec Connolly was left disappointed after losing to Kristine Shergold after being dropped to the canvas in the fourth round.

The evening was rounded off by Martin’s polished display against winless Edagha.

Fitzpatrick, who has introduced a new team behind Martin to help with his mental approach to fights, said: “Ryan’s opponent was a very dangerous puncher.

“He’d be moving away from Ryan then all of a sudden would leap in on top of him.

“But we have broadened Ryan’s team since the last defeat. We knew we had to change something because Ryan is a world-class boxer.

“He spars the top guys and more than shows his worth with them.

“It’s a mental thing with Ryan. We’ve had a sports psychologist come onboard, last night was about testing how the new system is working.

“He has a strength specialist, a physio, a psychologist and myself.

“He’s got a whole team around him now, and it showed. He was beautiful and composed.”

Fitzpatrick was left confused by the officials’ decision to award Shergold victory following her fight with Connolly.

According to the Swindon coach, Connolly comfortably won the opening two rounds before losing the third and fighting back in the fourth after being dropped.

The judges’ scorecards read 39-37 in favour of Shergold though, who dented the Swindon fighter’s record to 2-1.

Fitzpatrick added: “I think Bec was hard done by.

“I had her 39-37, and that’s how the judges had it but the other way around.

“She made the girl fall short with everything in the first two rounds.

“Her opponent was very strong.

“Bec did an excellent job, she did lose the third and got dropped early in the fourth but went on to win the rest of that round.”

In the original article it was incorrectly stated that Kristine Shergold had been a boxer on the white collar circuit prior to being a professional. We are happy to make clear this is not the case and that she enjoyed an amateur career prior to being a professional
