HANNAH Lewington took centre stage at the Wiltshire Track & Field Championships as she broke her own UK javelin record not just once but twice with a superb demonstration of throwing, writes KEVIN FAHEY.

The 12-year-old Swindon Harrier opened up the U13 age group competition with a mighty throw of 38.56m, which bettered her record mark of 38.37m set in October last year.

She followed up that with 38.40m in the second round and then unleashed a superb throw of 39.44m with her third and final attempt to cement her place as number one in the UK all-time lists.

Proud dad Jamie Lewington said: “Hannah has had a few competitions but she is really starting to hit form now, and we kind of expected a big throw without being certain of what to expect on the day.

“Fortunately, conditions were excellent for throwing. She was delighted to win and now Hannah is desperate to become the first U13 athlete to throw the javelin 40 metres, and she is not far off that target now.”

Lewington, who lives between Purton and Royal Wootton Bassett, only took up javelin throwing last year and has made good progress under the guidance of Harriers coaches Tom Dobbing, Alan Brown and John Dill.

She is not afraid to tackle other events for the club, and is also a keen hockey and netball player at school, so is keeping her sporting interests varied, but it is clear that she possesses a huge talent in being able to throw the javelin big distances, so her progress will be watched with interest.

She wasn’t the only Harrier to strike gold at Tidworth, as the club’s athletes amassed a huge tally of 82 medals, comprising 35 golds, 20 silvers and 27 bronze medals, which is a great reflection of the current work being done by the coaches.

The sprinters certainly enjoyed the conditions, and none more so than Teresa Iannetelli, who claimed a hat-trick of gold medals in the U20 women’s 100m, 200m and 400m events, with her 200m time of 25.95secs an electronic personal best.

Delleah Belgrave also impressed in the U15 sprints as she won the 100m in 13.22secs and the 200m in 27.15secs, while clubmate James Kyeremeh did the sprint double in the U13 events, clocking personal best times of 14.04secs and 30.36secs respectively.

The club’s one-lap sprinters showed their class in the U17 men’s 400m as the trio of Matthew Smith, Joseph Knibb and Archie Pearce secured a clean sweep of the podium places.

For Smith, who is coached by Kevin Buttle, it was his second PB in a week as he improved from 53.1secs in the Brewer Memorial Games at Cheltenham on Bank Holiday Monday to 52.71secs, dipping under 53 seconds for the first time.

It also lifts him to second in the South West rankings behind Wiltshire’s Rory Howorth.

There was another Harriers’ clean sweep in the U15 boys’ 300m, with Harry Cunningham claiming victory with a big PB of 41.16secs, as he broke 42 seconds for the first time, with Harry Ricketts and Finlay Banwell-Moore chasing him home.

In the throws, Katie Loach made a good impact with victory in the U17 women’s hammer and silver medals in the discus and long jump to underline her versatility.

In the U13 girls’ age group, Sophie Imeson had a good day, winning the long jump with a PB of 4.18m and adding silver in the discus, also a PB of 18.27m.

Sister Issy won the U15 girls’ shot with a PB throw of 9.09m and was third in the javelin with 25.78m, also a PB by over two metres.

In his first competition of the year, Ciaran Cooper won the senior men’s 400m and Lydia Rogers won the senior women’s 200m and long jump events.
