SWINDON boxing trainer Paddy Fitzpatrick believes there are big things to come for inexperienced trio Bec Connolly, Harry Webb and Brad Townsend.

Collectively, the three fighters have less than 10 bouts in the paid ranks, but Ferndale Road-based trainer Fitzpatrick sees plenty of potential within his stable.

All three fighters boxed at London’s York Hall just over a month ago, with Webb and Townsend extending their unbeaten records with victories, while Connolly suffered the first defeat of her professional career.

Fitzpatrick’s fighters are due back in the ring in the coming months, as Connolly joins Webb and former WBC world youth title challenger Ryan Martin at a show in Bristol on Friday, July 6, while Townsend travels to London with stablemate Sam Smith a week later.

Reflecting on Connolly's recent defeat, the Swindon trainer says respect for his charge has only grown after her first loss in the capital.

“Becky was hard done by in her last fight. I don’t want to be disrespectful, but I thought she clearly won that fight,” said Fitzpatrick.

“It is what it is. She definitely performed well, I’d expect Becky to get through another fight, which will make her 2-1, and then another two fights.

“Once she has those, she’ll be in a position where she can be challenging for belts, just like all the other ladies.

“She was gutted, but she knew she performed well.

"She spent 30-odd fights driving herself around the country, most male fighters wouldn’t do that.

“She used to arrive and find someone in the audience to work her corner for her, I have massive respect for her.

“I was gutted for her after she lost, but I didn’t have to pick her up at all after that fight.”

Welterweight Townsend and super-lightweight Webb both have records of 3-0 since turning professional.

With both fighters still in their early 20s, Fitzpatrick is already thinking about a long-term plan as he looks to tee them up for youth title fights, should all things go to plan this year.

“Harry and Bradley are the same. Harry is 21 and Bradley is going to be 23 in another couple of months,” said Fitzpatrick.

“They’re young enough to get a youth title, defend it and get some experience in championship rounds.

“That will be something I would be looking to do maybe next year.

"If we finish in July with them both 4-0 and then get a few other wins down the line, they could both be at 6-0 by the time we reach Christmas.

“After that, I’d look to get them some championship experience and I think going for a youth title is probably the best way to do that.”
