SWINDON’S Paddy Fitzpatrick says he has no doubts in the ability of Ryan Martin and adamant the welterweight will fulfil his potential.

Martin has endured a tough year, which saw him suffer his first defeat in the professional ranks after he came out on the wrong side of a points decision at the Oasis Leisure Centre against Michael McKinson for the WBC World Youth Title.

The 24-year-old then made a winning return at Swindon’s MECA, before losing for the second time at Leicester Arena.

However, Fitzpatrick believes those experience will only have made Martin stronger as he prepares to get back in the ring in Bristol in July.

“It’s a massive year for Ryan. We are working on little things that I will keep quiet for the moment but we are putting things into place,” he said.

“I’m trying to expand the opportunities that I believe his skill set deserves and I think I am on the right path.

“If that means I have to think outside of the box, I will do that because I think he deserves the opportunities to win those titles.

“He has learned a lot. He is an excellent talent and he will fulfil his potential, I know he win.”

The 24-year-old will look to improve his record to 10-2 in his next outing, which is on Friday, July 6 in Bristol, alongside Becky Connolly and Harry Webb

With two defeats in his last four fights, Fitzpatrick says he has seen enough from his man in those performances to know he is more than capable of competing at a decent level.

“Those fights gave him a massive amount of experience. There is a huge difference between believing and knowing what you can do,” he said.

“This is something that really started to play out when I was working with George Groves because as I said to him, you can believe what you want, but you never know anything about yourself for sure until you have done it.

“When you have done it, you know you’re capable and that is a more powerful man. He knows he can do 10 rounds without a problem, he also knows he has been competitive in championship rounds.

“Yes, he lost those fights but he hasn’t been lost in those fights. He also knows not everything is right yet too.”
