LEE Spalding says his Swindon Supermarine side are ready to compete in Southern League Premier South after completing their pre-season schedule.

Marine’s 4-2 win away at Cirencester Town on Saturday marked the end of their preparations for the new campaign.

Connor McDonagh bagged a hat-trick as Spalding’s men came from behind to see off Cirencester.

Fellow summer signing Stuart Fleetwood notched the visitors’ fourth goal of the afternoon.

The Marine boss says his players took a while to warm into the game, but insists he was happy with the overall performance from his troops.

However, Spalding reiterated to his side that they need to reproduce this form in their season opener against Tiverton Town at the Webbswood Stadium on Saturday.

“It was a nice way to round off pre-season,” said Spalding.

“The boys did well, I thought they gave a good account of themselves.

“We didn’t start brilliantly and Cirencester were probably the better side for 20 minutes, but then we got to grips with the game and we controlled it, especially in the second half.

“Once we got going, we were a lot better. We scored some good goals and created a lot of chances.

“It was really pleasing overall. All the lads got minutes into their legs and now it is a case of moving onto the first game of the season.”

In preparation for the step up in level following last season’s promotion from Southern League West, Spalding has been busy assembling his squad, with the Marine boss adding a familiar face to his ranks over the weekend.

Former Swindon Town man Dave Bampton has signed on at the club after re-gaining his fitness this summer.

Bampton featured for Shrivenham last season after recovering from a back injury.

He was joined by another late signing for Saturday’s game, as Spalding added attacking midfielder, Luke Williams

“Luke has come in from Wealdstone and he is a great addition for us. He is an attacking midfielder, which is brilliant,” said Spalding.

“Dave Bampton has been with the club previously and got himself back fully fit and got himself back in contention to be part of our squad.

“We’re really pleased to get both of those guys in.”
