SWINDON Town goalkeeper Luke McCormick is enjoying life as an underdog as he aims to dislodge Lawrence Vigouroux from Phil Brown’s starting XI.

McCormick is poised to make his second start of the season at Town's away trip to Morecambe today (3pm) and is now hoping to feature more frequently in the red and white.

The 35-year-old former Plymouth Argyle skipper has been afforded a window of opportunity to impress the Swindon manager after Vigouroux was called up to the Chilean national team.

McCormick says the club have a compact trio of stoppers at their disposal - with youngster Will Henry on his way back from a loan spell with Chippenham Town - and that they are all battling it out during training in a bid to assert their dominance.

The competitive element to training is something McCormick is enjoying, having been in both his and Vigouroux’s position in the past.

“Competing for one spot is something I have had to do throughout my career, on both sides of the coin,” he said.

“I’ve held down a position for years and years and now I find myself in the position where I have to compete with Lawrence, but also help him as well.

“I enjoy that aspect of the role. I do like putting myself up against him and Will because Will is dogging out with us too trying to get as much as he can out of it.

“It’s something I actually enjoy. I’ll admit Saturdays aren’t the same when you’re sitting on the bench but the day-to-day stuff is something I enjoy because it’s competition.

“The competitive edge is something born into you. When you’re a professional and when you’re lower down in the divisions you’re biting and scratching.

“We have all had to do that so you have to rely on the competitive edge from time to time.”

McCormick also believes there is a noticeable difference around the training ground when Vigouroux isn’t there but says his preparations haven’t altered too much due to his absence.

“We have missed Lawrence’s presence around the place. Not only on the training ground, he is a big character around the place,” he added.

“Our week has basically stayed the same, maybe I have got a little bit more work in but it’s not anything I haven’t been used to in the past.”
